On Wednesday, April 12, Central Islip resident Elmer Martinez, age 44, received the sentence, with an additional 10 years of post-release supervision, a month after pleading guilty to the abuse, the Suffolk County District Attorney announced.
Martinez, according to the investigation and his guilty plea, began the abuse in the fall of 2014.
The victim was 10 years old at the time.
The DA reported that Martinez touched the victim’s intimate parts at the outset of the abuse. As the abuse continued, Martinez escalated to acts of sexual intercourse.
Martinez also threatened the child in an attempt to stop her from reporting his behavior.
Six years later, in 2020, the victim came forward to the police, despite Martinez's threats.
“It is imperative that children feel safe coming forward to report sexual abuse,” said District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, adding that the victim “displayed tremendous bravery” in her report.
Martinez pleaded guilty to first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child in March 2023.
